Zoë Kane - Interdisciplinary Artist

My name is Zoë Kane. I am an interdisciplinary artist with an emphasis in sculpture, print-making, and letterpress. A principal theme in my work is the interplay of art and nature as a simultaneously nuanced, unifying, and potentially transgressive space. My work often depicts abstracted elements of nature combined with beautiful and grotesque representations of the body, drawing inspiration from the natural world and my personal experiences.

As I grew up in Portland, OR, I feel a particular calling to the Pacific Northwest as a deeply nostalgic and yet abundantly allusive space. That being said, the unique ecosystem of the PNW is incredibly inspiring to me and deeply connected to my creative process and work. As an artist who focuses on intersecting environmental and corporeal themes, the natural beauty and ecological diversity of the area provide a rich source of inspiration for my practice. In particular, I am drawn to the interplay of light, color, and texture found in the coastal landscape, weaving through the pine trees, and echoing onto the bodies that interact with it.

The Oregon Coast’s unique ecosystem creates a constantly evolving visual and embodied experience that I find both challenging and invigorating to capture in my work. For me, the Pacific North West is where senses can flow both tender and rough, like the rain, the river, and tides. Where sun trickles through mossy branches and bodies are seasoned with sand. Where wind blows salty and we remember in the rise of goosebumps and little hairs that our skin changes temperature when touched. Where there's something about the beginning of Spring and waiting for the first flowers to bloom after months of rain.

Additionally, my artistic approach is aligned with the study of place-based ecology. I believe that art has the power to foster a deeper connection between humans and the natural world, and that by creating work that reflects the unique characteristics of a specific place, we can inspire greater environmental awareness and dedication to nurturing body-mind-earth as one.
